You know when you are playing MW2, and someone is hosting? I don't know about you but I get curious. Me and Gface chanced upon one methoding of knowing where you host is.
If you are playing with Xfire logged in, the server you are playing on is displaid for anyone on your friiends list to observe. They just click on your name and in the right pane what you are playing and the server you are connected to, and a little flag appears.
You need another person and computer to be connected withn xfire of course, which for me is easy as Gface and I sit in an 'L' shape at our machines, so we can observe each other's screens easily. (Needless to say we never play head to head)
FWIT which is bugger all, we're in southern europe, I have been observing the connections, thus far 95% of hosts have been in europe, mainly france UK spain portulgal and germany.
Since the last steam upgrade and 1.08 update of MW2 the ping seems to be consistantly reasonable. i.e. 3 or 4.
It is possible to change the pingometer so the resolution is better. I am going to try it out, I am reliably informed that making that adjustment is with in the VAC rules. I know the info has been on here before, but I will post it again shortly.
